prep|o|si|tion

prep|o|si|tion
prep|o|si|tion «PREHP uh ZIHSH uhn», noun.
a word that shows certain relations between other words. With, for, by, and in are prepositions in the sentence “A man with rugs for sale walked by our house in the morning.”
[< Latin praepositiō, -ōnis < praepōnere < prae- before + pōnere put]
Usage preposition at end of sentence. Though formerly sometimes censured in textbooks, the use of a preposition at the end of a sentence is not always objectionable or easily avoidable (What did you do it for?). The effort to avoid it (Tell me what you object to) sometimes produces a clumsy (Tell me to what you object) or fussy effect (Tell me what it is which you object).
